砂漠のこと desert

私は絵を描く際、岩絵具という鉱物を砕いた画材を使用しています。膠というのりを一緒に混ぜることで絵具を画面に定着させることができるのですが、この砂状の絵具を混ぜているととても落ち着きます。

何故だろうと考えたら、私は小さい時から、砂絵とかキラキラした砂が好きだったと思い出しました。

加えて、図書館で砂に関する面白い本に出会ったのもそれを思い出すきっかけだったかもしれません。砂丘の粒子は場所によってCやFの音を奏でるらしいとか、砂についての昔話とか、様々な分野の視点から砂の世界を知ることができて興味深く読みました。

遡ること初海外の地を踏んだのは1997年8月の学校が主催する研修旅行先のエジプトでした。（厳密に言うと乗り継ぎのイギリスですが、走っただけのところなのでカウントしません　）小学生の時からテレビで見るたびにエジプトに行ってみたいなと思っていたので念願叶いとても嬉しかったのですが、いざ現地へ着くと思ったより街並みは現代的でしたし、中央分離帯のエリアで家族で夜中にピクニックらしきものを目撃したりと不思議な国でした。ただ見たかった砂漠やピラミッドの光景は思った通りで、なんとも言えない乾いた空気も感じることができて良かったと感じました。

私が砂漠のどんなところに惹きつけられるのか？風が吹くたびに形を変えていく様、延々と続く砂山の不思議な光景などが挙げられます。

今後砂漠を見ることにフォーカスするならば、昨年行かれなかったモロッコ、それから旅行番組で見た中東のオマーン、ブラジルのレンソイス・マラニャンセス国立公園に行ってみたいです。

Desert

I use Iwa-enogu (natural pigment), which is made from crushed minerals when I paint. I mix it with glue to make the paint stick to the screen, but I feel very relaxed when I mix it.

I don’t know why but I remembered that I have loved sand painting and shimmer since I was a child.

In addition, I came across an interesting book about sand at local library, which may have triggered this memory. It was interesting to learn about the world of sand from various perspectives, such as how the particles in sand dunes make C or F sounds depending on where they are located, or the old stories about sand.

The first time I stepped foot on foreign country was in Egypt in August 1997, as part of a study tour organized by the school. (Strictly speaking, it was a transit trip to UK, but it doesn't count since it was just a run.) I had wanted to go to Egypt every time I saw it on TV since I was in elementary school, so I was very happy to have my wish come true, but when I arrived there I found that the streets were more modern than I had expected, and I witnessed what looked like a family picnic in the middle of the night in the median strip area. The desert and the pyramids were exactly what I wanted to see and I was glad that I could feel the indescribably dry air.

What is it about the desert that attracts me? The way it changes shape as the wind blows and the mysterious sight of endless mountains of sand.

If I were to focus on seeing deserts in the future, I would like to visit Morocco, which I was not able to go last year, Oman in the Middle East, which I saw on a travel program, and Parque Nacional dos Lençóis Maranhenses（ National Park in Brazil）.
